Trayvon Martin, a tragedy and a media mess

The parents of a Florida boy are experiencing something that frightens most who have children: the prospect of burying their child. This is a case that’s gone very public. I’ve watched my Facebook blow up with people loudly proclaiming Zimmerman, the shooter of Trayvon, to be a murderer. Using the Facebook posts and insinuations by talking heads, let me piece together what the initial truth looked like:

Zimmerman (heavyset white racist redneck) saw Trayvon Martin, puppyfaced honor roll student, walking down the street with skittles in his hand. He called 9-11 on this kid, for no reason, because people do this. The 9-11 dispatcher said, “no don’t do anything, police are en route.” Zimmerman walks over to Trayvon Martin and shoots him dead. The police win the “Officer Barbrady” award for saying, “nothing to do here”

Information comes out about Zimmerman that seems to paint him as a loose cannon. Pictures of Trayvon as an 11year old are shown. The media jumps on this. Obama made a speech as he did with that “The uhhhh, Cambridge police acted stupidly” situation. I saw things on my Facebook showcasing Michael Vick vs Zimmerman, more or less implying Michael Vick went to jail for being black.

Because as we all know, Michael Vick must have been wrongly convicted, nor did he actually do anything wrong. He only more or less ran a dog fighting ring at his house. We also know for a fact that Zimmerman is a murderer. Zimmerman’s trial is  unnecessary, because only un-uniformed Al Queda terrorists caught on a battlefield shooting at American soldiers overseas in a warzone should get the benefit of a trial.

Well, more details have come out, including from witnesses actually at the scene.
-Witnesses say that the screaming heard on the 9-11 tape is from Zimmerman, who was being beat up by Martin.
-Zimmerman was apparently walking back to his SUV when he was attacked by Trayvon Martin, who pursued him and tackled him. Trayvon “Slimm” Martin (as labeled on his Facebook page) struck Zimmerman in the face, and slammed his head into the sidewalk, leaving him bloodied and battered- according to law enforcement.
“I could observe his back appeared to be wet and was covered in grass, as if he had been laying on his back on the ground,” the officer wrote. “Zimmerman was also bleeding from the nose and back of his head.”
-Zimmerman was more or less a “Self appointed” neighborhood watchman, in his gated community where there were a string of recent robberies. People in the community were on the look out for suspicious individuals.
-Zimmerman had never seen Trayvon Martin, who was walking through the gated community after hours with a hood over his face.

More on our “racist” Zimmerman:
-Zimmerman is a registered Democrat (looks like he can’t be a racist Republican/TeaPartier)
-Turns out he tutors young underprivileged black children on weekends, on his own time. This must be because he’s SO racist he’s trying to avoid looking racist.
-Zimmerman is in fact hispanic. For those who were assured only caucasian whites were capable of racism, this complicates things.
-Zimmerman does have a diverse group of friends in terms of their ethnic make up.

Here’s what else has occurred:
-The Black Panther Party has put a bounty on the head of Zimmerman, dead or alive. This is illegal and outrageous.
-Spike Lee tweeted the address of Zimmerman, it may not have anything to do with the above mentioned point. Turns out it wasn’t Zimmerman’s address. I hope the homeowners (Who turn out to be an older couple), are able to lawyer up and protect themselves.
-People are blaming this on “Florida’s shoot to kill law”. Note: They have not looked at how this law has affected crime (pro or con), they have not talked about whether or not it’s the will of the Floridians. Instead, those who will often tell you proudly that their political ideology is the one of empiricism, science, “reason”, understanding, open-mindedness, hugs and unicorns, et al – are now saying this law is the problem given the overwhelming evidence of this singular event, one in which they apparently are 100% sure of what has occurred.
-The media and outraged TV watchers have demanded for the resignations in the local Police. We do not know if in fact the officers that handled this are in fact the best (or worst) officers in the entire nation. Technically speaking, they could be among the best officers in the entire state. We do not know this. However, given media reports of an incident that has not yet gone to trial, this is sufficient to ask for resignations.
-Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are publicly doing whatever it is that they do.
-Sabrina Fulton (Trayvon’s mother)  is seeking marks for the phrases “I Am Trayvon” and “Justice for Trayvon,” according to filings made last week with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In both instances, Fulton is seeking the trademarks for use on “Digital materials, namely, CDs and DVDs featuring Trayvon Martin,” and other products. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/trayvon-martin-trademarks-769123
-I’m leaving out “details” on Trayvon Martin’s school record, but apparently there are things in it that make people question the honor-student-angel narrative.

Here’s my take, given the “evidence” we have now, in this case that has not yet been tried.
-Zimmerman should not have pursued Martin. He should have let it go. Martin’s problem was being in the wrong place at the wrong time in the wrong garment. Those things are not crimes. It’s a tragedy that he’s dead now. But it’s too late for that. For a great % of this encounter, he did nothing wrong, and Zimmerman, in retrospect, was being stupid. That night should have ended with two people scratching their heads, one guy feeling like an idiot for being jumpy, the other enjoying his skittles.

- Trayvon Martin was not shot for being black. Trayvon “Slimm” Martin was shot because he, apparently, assaulted Zimmerman. He should not have tackled Zimmerman while he was heading back for his car. He should not have repeatedly struck him despite Zimmerman’s shouting for him to stop. He should not have slammed Zimmerman’s head into the ground.  Zimmerman shot him, in what most other scenarios that wouldn’t even get local media attention. “Person A beating the daylights out of Person B, Person B shoots them after having their head slammed into the ground” is a “Good shoot” in most states (And by most states I mean 40+).

-The media needs to disengage their “Ralph Nader Crusader” mode. Some are blaming this on Florida’s stand your ground law. Even if this turns out to be a murder (after this case actually goes to court), this law would not apply. See, driving a car at 65MPH is legal, when doing so on a highway in a lawful manner. Driving a car off the road at 65MPH into a crowd of pedestrians is murder. Instead of doing actual research on this law and seeing if has curbed crime in the state, instead of actually asking the question, “maybe people shouldn’t have to flee criminals who would do them ill will”, the media has blamed this “crazy law” for what had occurred. That’s absurd, a knee jerk reactionary judgement made on next to no evidence, based on a case that has not even gone to trial yet. Laws like these exist all over the nation, and it has not turned the nation into the wild west. The talking heads need to stay in their lane on this one. Intellectuals love to state that “people are stupid in groups”- those calling for draconian gun restrictions in the face of what may, for all we know, be a legitimate self defense shooting, is a case study in this.

-On the race related conversation some want to have: If your religious beliefs include ‘political correctness’, you won’t like this. Apparently even a cursory look at statistics shows that Black on Black violence rates and Black on White violence rates are staggeringly higher than White on Black violence. My belief is: all of this violent crime is a problem!  - regardless of what that person’s race is. When a violent crime victim does not return home to friends and family, it is a tragedy no matter what their race is, no matter what their job is, no matter what their religious beliefs or sexual orientation is. I don’t think the most important conversation here is one race on another’s violence, it’s violence as a whole.

    Great post Joe!

I agree with most everything you’ve written here..This whole thing has gotten out of hand and has turned into a media circus…Here’s my take on the whole thing:

The media (per the usual) are looking for a story, not to actually report news with FACT(S). It terribly frightening that the media is rampant like a wild fire with most anything nowadays…not to mention the fact that with this whole Trayvon Martin case folks like MSNBC selectively edited the 911 phone call to make George Zimmerman look like a racist because he said the individual he was looking at was black..They completely cut out a good 3-5 seconds of the clip where the operator was asking him questions about the description of Trayvon.

On that same sort of note why haven’t there been any recent photos of good ol’ Trayvon released? I love how the only publicly displayed photos the media uses are of him in some tweeny brand t-shirt when he was around 14 years old. It falsely suggests that Zimmerman beat up a freshman in high school! When in fact Martin was 17 going on 18…he’s a grown man, not some innocent honor roll student that he might have been in middle school! If you delve a little deeper into the honor roll student you’ll find he was everything but a good kid. 3 suspensions from school consisting of: Excessive truancies from school, tagging and possession of a burglary tool, and then some sort of herp derp concerning a tweet about “swinging on a bus driver”…which turns out that Martin was on an “unauthorized part of school grounds..Wake up call! That is trespassing! If you also look at his RECENT photos he’s much more grown, is wearing a wife beater, and has a gold grill in his mouth. If you combine all of that with his twitter feeds you’ll quickly find out that Martin definitely thought it was cool to be gangster.

My main frustration though is that this whole thing has turned into a race issue and its absolute ludicrous. “He was racially profiled and executed”..one quick question: ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND? He was somewhere he shouldn’t have been. Why would he be in some gated community at night? His appearance only helped in making him look suspicious. But no he was racially profiled..So you’re telling me that If it looks like a criminal, and acts like a criminal…ITS AN INNOCENT 14 YR OLD WEARING A HOLLISTER SHIRT?? Now you have a copious amount of public figure heads like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson running amuck with “hate crimes” and “racial profiling”. This wasn’t a race issue from the start. But I’ll say it, they use the color of someone’s skin as an excuse for an agenda or some other herp derp…News flash: MURDER AND VIOLENCE ARE ILLEGAL; who cares about the color of your skin? Then good ol’ Barry got involved right from the start as well as other politicians on Capitol Hill screaming for action and justice. Why is the federal government getting involved in a STATE issue? Now it’s just being fueled by irrational political rocket fuel.

Overall I don’t think it was a bad shoot *from what has been presented so far*. I will leave it up to the DA and their investigation. I’m not trying to jump to a conclusion but from what’s been presented I think Zimmerman will walk away after this whole ordeal. Crying out for justice or wearing a hoodie on the floor of the House of Representatives will get no one anywhere. Let due process take its course and let the system work; it’s not perfect but it’s in place for a reason.

Solid rant! See what worries me is that the verdict is already in for people. That if Zimmerman isn’t hooked up to old sparky they’re going to exclaim that justice was not done. They’ll wonder “how this happens, America is so unfair”, and totally ignore the actual EVIDENCE that has come out concerning the case. It’s interesting to see the difference in narratives here. On one hand you have people who apparently experts on what cleaned up broken noses look like, who are assuming it’s Trayvon screaming on the tape, assuming Zimmerman’s a racist – piecing together what “must” have happened that night. On the other side, you have the testimony of the actual witnesses in the case – who paint a different picture. People are dangerous when they let their emotions run wild.

MSNBC’s selective editing: Reminds me of the time they showed that the tea party was racist for bringing guns to a rally (this is racist, somehow), when in fact the person who had the gun was black. There’s also a Media Matters (Who writes some of MSNBC’s newscasts) video floating around “proving” Bill O’Reilly is singing a different tune about the president vs oil prices, when in fact they hacked off the 10 seconds* of video in front of their clip that would have totally demolished their assertion. Amazing.
Hey, at least Jon Stewart monitoring Fox News full time is helping us, ja, comrade?

By TriangleMan, March 14, 2012 at 12:39 pmWhen I first heard about this incident, the tliades were vague and my initial thoughts were to shrug and say good riddance to the animals killing each other, because worthless scumbags are USUALLY the ones killing each other around here. Then I found another article that provided more information, and I can’t help but feel sad for this kid and his family. Not enough evidence my ass. The evidence they have is that he didn’t like the LOOK of the teenager when he called police to report a suspicious person. The suspicious part is that he was wearing a hoodie and walking slowly in the rain, and that these assholes always get away in Zimmerman’s words. The evidence they have is that he stalked the kid in his car, got out of his car to confront the kid, chased the kid, got into a fight with the kid, then shot the kid dead. THAT is the evidence they have. If he claims it is in self-defense, that is up to a judge to decide, not the cops. They have proof that he shot someone, they don’t have proof that it was self defense. The self-defense story is what needs to be proven. It’s innocent until proven guilty, and he has been proven guilty of shooting someone. Now is when it’s up to him to prove that the shooting was excusable.I’d bet my next paycheck that if the kid had managed to wrestle the gun away and shoot Zimmerman in self-defense instead, obviously because some crazy redneck twice his size just randomly attacked him, that he’d be behind bars waiting for his trial right now. Then to find out that the cops not only believe the impossible self-defense story purely on trust, this story has me seething. I hope a good attorney takes up an interest in this case and sues the pants off the HOA, the cops, and I hope one of the suspicious assholes Zimmerman misjudged Trayvon to be comes back to deliver sweet justice to him in the night. This guy is obviously just a power-hungry redneck who spends his time looking for any excuse to exert his perceived authority upon others. Somebody do the world a favor and bump him off already.

I appreciate your comment- even though yours is one of dissent! If you took the time to read my post, thank you again, because as someone who disagrees with it you likely had to bite your tongue through it. That said there are several holes in your comment:

    1) Yes, Trayvon was wearing a hoody and walking slowly in the rain… in a neighborhood he did not live, that had had a number of break ins in that time span. He did nothing wrong up to this point.

    2) Your construction of the events is the pieced together media narrative, full of sensationalism. However I’ll entertain this. Explain the following:
-Zimmerman did in fact have a wound on the back of his head as well as his nose, which HD video footage showed. Police reports show this. (Note: The police were on the scene that night. You were not.) Apparently there were grass stains on the back of his shirt.
-Witnesses said Trayvon hit Zimmerman first, then mounted him and began swinging.
-If Zimmerman wanted to beat up and shoot this kid, why did he fire once? His Keltec PF-9 pistol holds 7+1 rounds. Why didn’t he empty the gun if his goal was to assinate this kid? (The wounds would have likely been all over his body with different entrance angles if this were the case.)
-Why did Zimmerman get close enough to have the tar beaten out of him, as opposed to shooting him from a distance? Which none of the witnesses say he did, nor does the physical evidence show.
-Why was Trayvon’s body spotless save for the entry wound on his chest?
-Trayvon’s gunshot wound had a powder burn ring around it consistent with being VERY close to the muzzle. The PF-9 did not cycle, leading most anyone with a passing knowledge of that gun’s operation to believe that something obstructed the slide from reciprocating. Being pressed into the body at close range is consistent with this.

    3) Even if this is a “murder” case, this would be decided by a jury, not a judge.

    4) No, innocent until proven guilty means the state has to prove that George Zimmerman committed murder. Zimmerman does not have to prove his innocence, for better or worse.

    5) That narrative is false and inflammatory. Had Trayvon wrestled the gun and shot him, with witnesses present – (which there were), this story would be different. Black on black violent crime rates and black on white crime rates are FAR AND AWAY higher than white on black crime, nice try though.

    6) The use of redneck as a derogatory term: The term redneck is pretty much outdated (unless you’re a social liberal or what some call a cultural marxist, and you have no problem labeling people you’ve never met), the south’s culture and some of its aspects have changed in the past 60 years. Most are okay with their “omgah redneck racisstssssssss” narrative, and go on believing something that flat out isn’t real. You’re one.

    7) The self defense story isn’t impossible. In fact you’re showing the very parochial nature of your understanding of the case, and of many of the processes and institutions involved in this situation and ones like these.

    8) You’re literally calling for the murder of a private citizen now O.o Here you were talking about vigilantism, and you went ahead and not only condoned it, but advocated it?! What an alarming lack of principle, and thought process that never made it past step 1.

    9) That “power hungry redneck” is a Hispanic man, registered democrat (which is no real predictor of one’s biases, but some would love to believe this), one that volunteered his time to tutor young (black) children. Redneck? By what metric?

My guess is that you’re very emotionally charged up about this, and you’ve believed the words of others who lied to you. You were wrong up and down, from start to finish. Despite this, I hope you can find my other posts on this blog interesting! If you avoid the ones labelled “politics”, you may find a whole lot of laughs and information here.

    Take care!
